About this collection
Laurence Fuller’s The Fortune stands as a profound and evocative meditation on humanity’s complex and often fraught relationship with the natural world.
Premiering as a cinematic poetry immersive exhibition during Miami Art Week, this collection transcends the boundaries of traditional art forms, blending poetic narration, cutting-edge AI animation, and timeless themes.
Rooted in Fuller’s award-winning novella, the work unravels in four acts, each offering a poignant reflection on the interplay between tradition, exploitation, spiritual connection, and the eternal rhythm of life.
At its core, The Fortune uses the brutal tradition of whaling as a metaphor to explore mankind’s relentless pursuit of dominance over nature, while simultaneously yearning for harmony within it.
This duality is embodied in the journey of the protagonist, whose evolution mirrors humanity’s broader struggle to reconcile its destructive impulses with a deeper, spiritual connection to the natural world.
Through the lens of whaling, a practice steeped in both legacy and consequence, Fuller invites the viewer to confront the weight of history and rediscover their place within the larger tapestry of existence.
Opening the narrative, The Harpoon introduces Uncle Svenson, a figure carved from the harshness of the northern seas, bound to its traditions yet burdened by their cost. The act juxtaposes power with decay, as the harpooner’s pursuit of mastery over the ocean becomes his undoing.
Through haunting animation, the rusted harbors and crimson tides reflect a world caught between survival and conscience. Svenson’s life becomes a harpoon cast into the abyss, pulling back centuries of exploitation while echoing the ocean’s refusal to forget.
The second act shifts to the perspective of a whaler, whose letters to a distant love articulate the tension between duty and longing.
Through lyrical narration and fluid animations, Fuller captures the restless movement of the sea, the burden of legacy, and the haunting allure of home. This act bridges the internal and external struggles of its protagonist, revealing the sea as both battlefield and sanctuary.
As echoes of his father’s wisdom guide him, "You will learn pain, and through it, you will see that we are all one", the whaler begins to unravel the shared humanity that connects individual and collective memory.
The Whale’s Song marks a pivotal moment of awakening. Here, the whaler descends into the ocean’s depths and encounters the ancient, haunting song of the whales.
This act transforms the sea from a site of conquest to a realm of communion, as the mechanical grind of the ship dissolves into the organic harmony of the natural world.
The animation captures the fragile balance of life beneath the waves, juxtaposing the glistening currents with the protagonist’s burgeoning spiritual resonance.
In this act, Fuller invites viewers to contemplate the wisdom embedded in the rhythms of nature, which stand in stark contrast to humanity’s relentless attempts to control it.
By merging ancient themes with contemporary innovation, The Fortune reflects Fuller’s unique ability to weave classical sensibilities into modern storytelling. The inclusion of AI models trained on Stephanie Fuller’s brushstrokes and collaborations with artists such as Henrik Uldalen and Jenni Pasanen exemplifies the seamless integration of tradition and technology.
The work’s immersive nature amplifies its impact, allowing audiences to experience its narrative on a visceral level, as they are enveloped by the tides of memory, nature, and self-reflection.
The Fortune is not merely an exhibition; it is an odyssey, a call to confront humanity’s legacy and rediscover the harmony that lies within the mysteries of the natural world. It reminds us that in the rhythms of the sea, and in the fleeting whispers of time, there exists a profound and enduring wisdom waiting to be embraced.
